We Encourage Someone To Want to Be a Leader
You can't make people use their leadership
abilities. You have to motivate others by your own enthusiasm and enjoyment.
If you enjoy leading, other people may also develop a desire to lead. The
desire for apprenticeship is caught, rather than taught. Jesus related
personally to His disciples.. His companionship was the most important
ingredient of their training.
Mark 3 13Jesus decided to ask some of his disciples to go up on a mountain with him, and they went. 14Then he chose twelve of them to be his apostles, so that they could be with him. (CEV)
Acts 4: 13The officials were amazed to see how brave Peter and John were, and they knew that these two apostles were only ordinary men and not well educated. The officials were certain that these men had been with Jesus. (CEV)
What works best in finding an apprentice? Find someone who likes to be with you, to spend time with you, to talk with you, and to work at bringing people to know Jesus as Lord. Remember how Mary sat and listened to Jesus. Are we burning with a passion for following Jesus and leading others to also follow Him?
Luke 10: 39She [Martha] had a sister named Mary, who
sat down in front of the Lord and was listening to what he said. 40Martha
was worried about all that had to be done....
41The Lord answered, "Martha, Martha!
You are worried and upset about so many things,
42but only one
thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken
away from her." (CEV)
We will attract others when we believe and show them that what we are doing is the most important and worthwhile thing in this world. God will then help attract others. People came to Jesus because they were excited and knew that "This is going to be good!"
Matthew 9: 36When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them. They were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37He said to his disciples, "A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. 38Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in." (CEV)
2 Timothy 2: 1 Timothy, my child, Christ Jesus is kind, and you must let him make you strong. 2You have often heard me teach. Now I want you to tell these same things to followers who can be trusted to tell others. 3As a good soldier of Christ Jesus you must endure your share of suffering. 4Soldiers on duty don't work at outside jobs. They try only to please their commanding officer. 5No one wins an athletic contest without obeying the rules. 6And farmers who work hard are the first to eat what grows in their field. 7If you keep in mind what I have told you, the Lord will help you understand completely. 8Keep your mind on Jesus Christ! (CEV)
Advantages of Emphasizing the "Apprentice" Role
1. Follows the model of Jesus with his disciples.
2. Creates less individualism and more of a team effort.
3. Reduces the probability of group leader burnout.
4. Spreads out and improves the task of leadership development.
5. Guarantees an increasing supply of future leaders.
6. Teaches leaders how to share ministry and avoid too much
dependency.
7 .Offers a place where people are encouraged to experiment.
8. Accomplishes skill training through the coaching and modeling
process.
9. Enables churches to offer quality care because new groups
can be formed.
10. Cultivates less an attitude of "the pastor wants this" and more
of "God wants this!"
