James 2: 14My friends, what good is it to say you
have faith, when you don't do anything to show that you really do have
faith? Can that kind of faith save you? 15If you know someone
who doesn't have any clothes or food, 16you shouldn't just say,
"I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty
to eat." What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help?
17Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and
dead! (CEV)
1. What makes a passion for obedience and good deeds important
parts of being faithful?
Leviticus 25: 35If any of your people become poor
and unable to support themselves, you must help them, just as you are supposed
to help foreigners who live among you. 36-37Don't take advantage
of them..(CEV)
2. Why has God always wanted His people to feel and show compassion
by our lifestyle?
1 John 3: 17If we have all we need and see one of
our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot
say we love God. 18Children, you show love for others by truly
helping them, and not merely by talking about it. (CEV)
3. When do pity, compassion, and helpful action work well together?
Luke 10: 1Later the Lord chose seventy-two other followers
and sent them out two by two to every town and village where he was about
to go. 2He said to them: large crop is in the fields, but there
are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out
workers to bring it in. (CEV)
4. How did God make His difficult work more effective by sending
friends out together?
Romans 4: 5But you cannot make God accept you because
of something you do. God accepts sinners only because they have faith in
him. (CEV)
5. What happens to our faith when we think that we have to earn
God's love and acceptance?
Titus 3: 5He saved us because of his mercy, and not
because of any good things that we have done. God washed us by the power
of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning. 6God
sent Jesus Christ our Savior to give us his Spirit. 7Jesus treated
us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us
the hope of eternal life. 8This message is certainly true. These
teachings are useful and helpful for everyone. I want you to insist that
the people follow them, so that all who have faith in God will be sure
to do good deeds. (CEV)
6. Describe how you felt when your own children loved and enjoyed
doing good things.
