Luke 12: 16So Jesus told them this story: A rich man's
farm produced a big crop, 17and he said to himself, "What can
I do? I don't have a place large enough to store everything." 18Later,
he said, "Now I know what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger
ones, where I can store all my grain and other goods. 19Then
I'll say to myself, 'You have stored up enough good things to last for
years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.' " 20But
God said to him, "You fool! Tonight you will die. Then who will get what
you have stored up?" 21"This is what happens to people who store
up everything for themselves, but are poor in the sight of God." (CEV)
Luke 12: 29Don't keep worrying about having something
to eat or drink. 22Jesus said to his disciples: I tell you not
to worry about your life! Don't worry about having something to eat or
wear. 23Life is more than food or clothing.... 30Only
people who don't know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father
knows what you need. (CEV)
1. What attitudes cause us to store up things for ourselves
and overlook the needs of others?
Matthew 6: 19Don't store up treasures on earth! Moths
and rust can destroy them, and thieves can break in and steal them. 20Instead,
store up your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy
them, and thieves cannot break in and steal them. 21Your heart
will always be where your treasure is. (CEV)
2. Why does Jesus stress our need to make sure the treasures
of our hearts are in Heaven?
Romans 8: 28We know that God is always at work for
the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for
his purpose.... (CEV)
Acts 14: 17But he showed that he was there by the
good things he did. God sends rain from heaven and makes your crops grow.
He gives food to you and makes your hearts glad. (CEV)
3. How does God actually work out everything for the good of
those who love Him?
James 1: 17Every good and perfect gift comes down
from the Father who created all the lights in the heavens. He is always
the same and never makes dark shadows by changing. (CEV)
2 Peter 1: 3We have everything we need to live a
life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when
we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. (CEV)
4. When we keep receiving wonderful gifts from God how can we
honor Him with them?
2 Corinthians 9: 8God can bless you with everything
you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of
good things for others. (CEV)
1 Peter 4: 10Each of you has been blessed with one
of God's many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use
your gift well. 11.... If you have the gift of helping others,
do it with the strength that God supplies. Everything should be done in
a way that will bring honor to God because of Jesus Christ, who is glorious
and powerful forever. Amen. (CEV)
