1 Peter 4: 10Each of you has been blessed with one
of God's many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use
your gift well. 11If you have the gift of speaking, preach God's
message. If you have the gift of helping others, do it with the strength
that God supplies. Everything should be done in a way that will bring honor
to God because of Jesus Christ, who is glorious and powerful forever. (CEV)
1. What can you do to find out and use the gift or gifts that
God has given to you?
Luke 10: 33A man from Samaria then came traveling
along that road. When he saw the man, he felt sorry for him 34and
went over to him. He treated his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged
them. Then he put him on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he
took care of him. 35The next morning he gave the innkeeper two
silver coins and said, "Please take care of the man. If you spend more
than this on him, I will pay you when I return."
36Then Jesus asked, "Which one of these
three people was a real neighbor to the man who was beaten up by robbers?"
37The teacher answered, "The one who showed pity." Jesus said,
"Go and do the same!" (CEV)
2. How does the story of the Samaritan show us God's view of
self-righteous religion?
1 Corinthians 10: 23Some of you say, "We can do whatever
we want to!" But I tell you that not everything may be good or helpful.
24We should think about others and not about ourselves. (CEV)
3. Why does God want us to think about others and not do everything
that we would like?
2 Corinthians 1: 3Praise God, the Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ! The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort.
4He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share
that same comfort with others in trouble. 5We share in the terrible
sufferings of Christ, but also in the wonderful comfort he gives. 6We
suffer in the hope that you will be comforted and saved. And because we
are comforted, you will also be comforted, as you patiently endure suffering
like ours. 7You never disappoint us. You suffered as much as
we did, and we know that you will be comforted as we were. (CEV)
4. What is there about our own troubles that soften us up so
that we sympathize with others?
Galatians 6: 7You cannot fool God, so don't make a
fool of yourself! You will harvest what you plant. 8If you follow
your selfish desires, you will harvest destruction, but if you follow the
Spirit, you will harvest eternal life. 9Don't get tired of helping
others. You will be rewarded when the time is right, if you don't give
up. 10We should help people whenever we can, especially if they
are followers of the Lord. (CEV)
5. Tell us what has helped you the most to control your selfish
desires and follow the Spirit.
