Facing & Dealing with the Realities of Family Life
Ice-Breaker: Tell how your family deals with difficult situations. How do you react to these?

James 2: 12Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free. 13Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful! (CEV)
1. In what ways did Jesus show pity on others? How was He merciful?

James 4: 4 Why do you fight and argue with each other? Isn't it because you are full of selfish desires that fight to control your body? 2You want something you don't have, and you will do anything to get it.... 6... "God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble." 10Be humble in the LORD'S presence, and he will honor you. (CEV)
2. How does God help us to keep peace and avoid hostility in our families?

1 Peter 3: 15Honor Christ and let him be the Lord of your life. Always be ready to give an answer when someone asks you about your hope. Colossians 4: 6Be pleasant and hold their interest when you speak the message. Choose your words carefully and be ready to give answers to anyone who asks questions. (CEV)
3. What can we do to let Christ be Lord of our life? How would doing this affect others?

Proverbs 20: 7The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him." (NIV)
Galatians 6: 7... You will harvest what you plant. 8If you follow your selfish desires, you will harvest destruction, but if you follow the Spirit, you will harvest eternal life.... (CEV)
4. When should we avoid bailing our children out of problems they may need to solve?

Ecclesiastes 7: 2It's better to go to a funeral than to attend a feast; funerals remind us that we all must die. 3Choose sorrow over laughter because a sad face may hide a happy heart. 4A sensible person mourns, but fools always laugh. (CEV)
5. What do you suppose God wants you to learn from this passage?

2 Timothy 3: 14Keep on being faithful to what you were taught and to what you believed. After all, you know who taught you these things. 15Since childhood, you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to make you wise enough to have faith in Christ Jesus and be saved. 16Everything in the Scriptures is God's Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. 17The Scriptures train God's servants to do all kinds of good deeds. (CEV)
6. How does this passage give us confidence? Why is faith in Jesus wise?
