Leadership by Example: A Call to Courage
IceBreaker: Describe a time you were scared to do something, but did it anyhow.

Eph 1: 22God has put all things under the power of Christ, and for the good of the church he has made him the head of everything. John 10: 27My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me.... 1 Cor 11: 1You must follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (CEV)
1. Why is it important for a leader to lead a good example?

Acts 20: 28Look after yourselves and everyone the Holy Spirit has placed in your care. Be like shepherds to God's church. It is the flock that he bought with the blood of his own Son.... (CEV)
1 Peter 5: 2Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money. 3Don't be bossy to those people who are in your care, but set an example for them. (CEV)
2. Why does the Bible use the analogy (or parable) of sheep & shepherds?

Titus 1: 6An elder must be well thought of for his good life.... 7An elder must live a blameless life because he is God's minister. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money.... 9They must stick to the true message they were taught, so that their good teaching can help others and correct everyone who opposes it. (CEV)
3. What can we do to help our elders?

James 5: 14If you are sick, ask the church leaders to come and pray for you. Ask them to put olive oil on you in the name of the Lord. 15If you have faith when you pray for sick people, they will get well. The Lord will heal them, and if they have sinned, he will forgive them. (CEV)
4. How does having faith affect this process? Can we be healed today?

Hebrews 13: 7Don't forget about your leaders who taught you God's message. Remember what kind of lives they lived and try to have faith like theirs. 8Jesus Christ never changes! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.... 17Obey your leaders and do what they say. They are watching over you, and they must answer to God. So don't make them sad as they do their work. Make them happy. Otherwise, they won't be able to help you at all. (CEV)
5. Describe practical ways in which we can support our leaders.

1 Timothy 5: 19Don't listen to any charge against a church leader, unless at least two or three people bring the same charges. 20But if any of the leaders should keep on sinning, they must be corrected in front of the whole group, as a warning to everyone else. (CEV)
6. How is it that gossip is so destructive?
