1 John 2: 15Don't love the world or anything that
belongs to the world. If you love the world, you cannot love the Father.
16Our foolish pride comes from this world, and so do our selfish
desires and our desire to have everything we see. None of this comes from
the Father. 17The world and the desires it causes are disappearing.
But if we obey God, we will live forever. (CEV)
1. How can we overcome pride and the desire to have everything that
we see?
Psalm 127: 1Without the help of the LORD it is useless
to build a home or to guard a city. 2It is useless to get up
early and stay up late in order to earn a living. God takes care of his
own, even while they sleep. (CEV)
2. What does God do to give us rest while we sleep? How has He helped
you?
Hebrews 4: 1The promise to enter the place of rest
is still good, and we must take care that none of you miss out. 2We
have heard the message, just as they did. But they failed to believe what
they heard, and the message did not do them any good. 3Only
people who have faith will enter the place of rest. It is just as the Scriptures
say, "God became angry and told the people, 'You will never enter my place
of rest!' " ....
4In fact, somewhere the Scriptures say that by the seventh
day, God had finished his work, and so he rested.... 11We should
do our best to enter that place of rest, so that none of us will disobey
and miss going there, as they did. (CEV)
3. What is required of us to enter God's place of rest?
Genesis 2: 2By the seventh day God had finished his
work, and so he rested. (CEV)
Mark 2: 27Jesus finished by saying, "People were
not made for the good of the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for the good
of people. 28So the Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath." (CEV)
Matthew 11: 28If you are tired from carrying heavy
burdens, come to me and I will give you rest. 29Take the yoke
I give you. Put it on your shoulders and learn from me. I am gentle and
humble, and you will find rest. 30This yoke is easy to bear,
and this burden is light. (CEV)
4. Why did Jesus change everything as Lord of the Sabbath, and what
is the yoke of Christ?
Philippians 4: 4Delight yourself in The Lord, yes,
find your joy in him at all times. 5Have a reputation for gentleness,
and never forget the nearness of your Lord. 6Don't worry over
anything whatever; tell God every detail of your needs in earnest and thankful
prayer, 7and the peace of God, which transcends human understanding,
will keep constant guard over your hearts and minds as they rest in Christ
Jesus. 8Here is a last piece of advice. If you believe in goodness
and if you value the approval of God, fix your minds on whatever is true
and honorable and just and pure and lovely and praiseworthy. Model your
conduct on what you have learned from me, on what I have told you and shown
you, and you will find that the God of peace will be with you. (PHILLIPS)
5. Why and how does the peace of God guard our hearts and minds and
give us rest in Christ?
