Deuteronomy 6: 4Listen, Israel! The LORD our God is
the only true God! 5So love the LORD your God with all your
heart, soul, and strength. 6Memorize his laws 7and
tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the
time, whether you're at home or walking along the road or going to bed
at night, or getting up in the morning.
8Write down copies and
tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them.
9Write
these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates. (CEV)
1. What are some practical ways in which we can do this?
Joshua 24: 14Then Joshua told the people: Worship
the LORD, obey him, and always be faithful. Get rid of the idols your ancestors
worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River and
in Egypt. 15But if you don't want to worship the LORD, then
choose right now! Will you worship the same idols your ancestors did? Or
since you're living on land that once belonged to the Amorites, maybe you'll
worship their gods. I won't. My family and I are going to worship and obey
the LORD! 16The people answered: We could never worship other
gods or stop worshiping the LORD. 17The LORD is our God. We
were slaves in Egypt as our ancestors had been, but we saw the LORD work
miracles to set our people free and to bring us out of Egypt. Even though
other nations were all around us, the LORD protected us wherever we went...
2. Describe what kind of parent God is to us.
Judges 2: 2 ... We made an agreement that I promised
never to break, 2and you promised not to make any peace treaties
with the other nations that live in the land. Besides that, you agreed
to tear down the altars where they sacrifice to their idols. But you didn't
keep your promise.... 10After a while the people of Joshua's
generation died, and the next generation did not know the LORD or any of
the things he had done for Israel. 11_13The LORD had brought
their ancestors out of Egypt, and they had worshiped him. But now the Israelites
stopped worshiping the LORD and worshiped the idols of Baal and Astarte,
as well as the idols of other gods from nearby nations. The LORD was so
angry (CEV)
3. How does God deal with disobedience?
Proverbs 13: 22If you obey God, you will have something
to leave your grandchildren. If you don't obey God, those who live right
will get what you leave.... 24If you love your children, you
will correct them; if you don't love them, you won't correct them. Proverbs
19: 18Correct your children before it's too late; if you
don't punish them, you are destroying them. Proverbs 22: 6Teach
your children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still
do right. Proverbs 23: 13Don't fail to correct your children.
You won't kill them by being firm, Proverbs 29: 17If
you correct your children, they will bring you peace and happiness.
4. How does God correct us? How then should we correct our children?
