Matthew 5: ¹⁰God blesses those people who are treated badly for doing right. They belong to the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. ¹²Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago. (CEV)

Matthew 16: ²⁴Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me. ²⁵If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it. ²⁶What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul? (CEV)

John 16: ³³I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world. (CEV)

Romans 8: ¹⁸I am sure that what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory that will be shown to us... ³⁵Can anything separate us from the love of Christ? Can trouble, suffering, and hard times, or hunger and nakedness, or danger and death? (CEV)

2 Cor 1: ⁵We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ, but also in the wonderful comfort he gives.... ⁷...You suffered as much as we did, and we know that you will be comforted as we were. (CEV)

2 Cor 12: ¹⁰....I am glad to be weak or insulted or mistreated or to have troubles and sufferings, if it is for Christ. Because when I am weak, I am strong. (CEV)

2 Timothy 1: ⁷God's Spirit doesn't make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control. ⁸Don't be ashamed to speak for our Lord. (CEV)

1 Pet 2: ²⁰....God will bless you, if you have to suffer for doing something good. ²¹....God chose you to suffer as you follow in the footsteps of Christ, who set an example by suffering for you. (CEV)

1 Peter 4: ¹³Be glad for the chance to suffer as Christ suffered. It will prepare you for even greater happiness when he makes his glorious return. (CEV)

1. Why do people who want to do what is right sometimes get criticized by others around them?
2. When we give up something that we can't really keep, how do we receive what we can't lose?
3. How does our willingness to suffer for others show God's and Christ's love for them?
4. What are some things that Jesus' disciples endured for others without complaining?
5. Describe when God has enabled you to exercise power and love and self-control.
