Matthew 9: 10Later, Jesus and his disciples were having
dinner at Matthew's house. Many tax collectors and other sinners were also
there. 11Some Pharisees asked Jesus' disciples, "Why does your
teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?" 12Jesus
heard them and answered, "Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick
people do. 13Go and learn what the Scriptures mean when they
say, 'Instead of offering sacrifices to me, I want you to be merciful to
others.' I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came
to invite sinners." (CEV)
1. Who are the good people? Were there any on earth before Jesus came?
Isaiah 61: 2... The LORD has sent me to comfort those
who mourn, 3especially in Jerusalem.
He sent me to give them flowers in place of their sorrow, olive oil
in place of tears, and joyous praise in place of broken hearts. They will
be called "Trees of Justice," planted by the LORD to honor his name.
(CEV)
2. What good news is the prophet bringing to the poor and the broken
hearted?
Matthew 5: 47If you greet only your friends, what's
so great about that? Don't even unbelievers do that? 48But you
must always act like your Father in heaven. Romans 15: 7Honor
God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you. 8I
tell you that Christ came as a servant of the Jews to show that God has
kept the promises he made to their famous ancestors. Christ also came,
9so that the Gentiles would praise God for being kind to them.
It is just as the Scriptures say, "I will tell the nations about you, and
I will sing praises to your name." (CEV)
3. Why pray if our Father knows what we need before we ask him?
Acts 2: 15You are wrong to think that these people
are drunk. After all, it is only nine o'clock in the morning. 16But
this is what God had the prophet Joel say, 17"When the last
days come,
I will give my Spirit to everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams.18In
those days I will give my Spirit to my servants, to my servants, both men
and women, and they will prophesy.... 21Then the Lord will save
everyone who asks for his help." (CEV)
4. What does Peter want people to understand, and what tells you Joel's
words are coming true?
Ephesians 1: 17I ask the glorious Father and God of
our Lord Jesus Christ to give you his Spirit. The Spirit will make you
wise and let you understand what it means to know God.18My prayer
is that light will flood your hearts and that you will understand the hope
that was given to you when God chose you. Then you will discover the glorious
blessings that will be yours together with all of God's people. 19I
want you to know about the great and mighty power that God has for us followers.
It is the same wonderful power he used 20when he raised Christ
from death and let him sit at his right side in heaven. (CEV)
5. When a Christian plugs into God's energy, what kind of power can
be expected?
